? On 08.11.2023, the first debate of this academic year was held, conducted according to the new rules in a modified Oxford formula.
❗ Before the start of the proper part, the President of the Academic Circle – Krzysztof Zbigniew Zieliński – inaugurated the meeting with a short organisational presentation on the Circle’s activities for the 2023/2024 academic year.
✨ The topic of the debate was complex and left the audience with a wide room for interpretation – “Does the length of the sentence have an impact on the offender?
If so, what kind? – The penitentiary system and non-legal aspects of rehabilitation of legal systems in the world’.
⚖️ Starting from the psychological and sociological aspects of the topic, students referred to the legal orders of Norway, Japan and also the United States. There was also a reference to Polish legal regulations in this area.
? Most of the speakers unanimously stated that the punishment has a great impact on the offender, and each argumentation proved to be relevant and interesting. At the same time, reference was made to the preventive function of the dimension of punishment, as well as to the re-socialisation aspects, the foundations of which should be sought in the humane treatment of each convicted person.
? There was also room for a fruitful discussion, which orbited around the issue of effective re-socialisation and allowed concrete conclusions to be drawn in terms of enabling prisoners to re-enter the society of law as a utilitarian citizen.
?? Participants enjoyed a sweet treat during the meeting in the form of banana bread made by Secretary Gabriela Wąż….
? We would like to thank all participants for their participation (thank you for the high attendance!) and invite you to the Academic Circle’s next initiatives!!! ?
